Medical Director Pure Sports Recovery

Dr. Atman Reyes is a psychiatrist and the Medical Director at Pure Sports Recovery. He is board certified and has been working as an inpatient psychiatrist for 17 years. Dr. Reyes was chief resident at USC in the Fellowship program and is accomplished in his field.

In this interview he speaks about the recovery and mental wellness programs at Pure Sports Recovery and the use of TMS as part of program protocols.

Interviewer:
What type of modalities do you implement at Pure Sports Recovery as part of the recovery, mental health and brain health programs for pro athletes?

Dr. Atman Reyes:
At Pure Sports Recovery, we do the most advanced neurofeedback treatments. We also utilize TMS, which is transcranial magnetic stimulation. I have been a TMS provider since TMS was introduced in 2009. At that time, it was considered cutting-edge medical treatment. We have seen great improvements by making TMS part of our treatment protocols.

Interviewer:
What type of conditions can TMS be used to treat?

Dr. Atman Reyes:
When we treat clinical depression, we are really targeting the neurovegetative symptoms of depression, which are the physical symptoms, which impair a person’s functioning.

TMS is targeted to treating that, and we have seen improvement in energy levels, the ability to enjoy activities, the ability to concentrate better, sleep, appetite, and just general functioning.

In the athletes that we treat, we see either slow-wave or fast-wave dysregulation in their brain function. With TMS treatment and our advanced neurofeedback treatment, we are seeing vast improvement into more normal states of function.

Interviewer:
When it comes to treating athletes for mental wellness what impact have you seen when utilizing TMS?

Dr. Atman Reyes:
We’ve seen improvement in 100% of the athletes that we treated. They all have stated that they wished they could have had this treatment earlier in their professional playing career. It would have enhanced their playing career and peak performance. With our epigenetic model, we treat the whole person. We look at the physical, the mental, we consider exercise, nutrition, meditation, mindfulness. To monitor our client’s progress, we do initial assessments, brain mapping, cognitive testing, and we assess to make sure that they are moving forward.

Interviewer:
What is the overall approach at Pure Sports Recovery and why is it so successful?

Dr. Atman Reyes:
I have worked in various treatment centers, and here at Pure Sports Recovery, we take the approach of treating the whole person, mind, emotions, and body. And in my professional experience, I have never seen results like this before.
